The SPARKLING SOULS interview series is a conversation with inspiring women and men creating positive change and living their dream life. We explore my favourite question; what do you believe in?
Meet Erin Williams. She’s a writer and self-love advocate whose truthful words and shining spirit will light up your day.
When you sink your eyes into Erin’s blog, In Our Stillness and in her two gorgeous e-Books, Devoted and Falling in Self-Love, you’ll discover divinely crafted sentences exploring self-love and healthy living. Messages that, in my opinion, women of our time need to hear.
Erin and I connected in a mutual Facebook group at the beginning of 2015 and now I feel incredibly grateful to spend a couple of hours each week moving and marvelling at the sunrise over the ocean with this incredible woman (she’s now a dear personal training client).
Feel the love and kindness exude from her words below, and enjoy getting to know Erin!
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF
I’m a blogger, writer, travel aficionado and a stillness seeker. I write to inspire women to define their own sense of wellness, fall deeply in self-love and reignite their missing sense of vitality.
I love learning – about myself and the world, and I’m always seeking out new adventures. You can always find me with either a book in my hands or my hiking shoes on. And I truly believe that we all need to add a bit more stillness in to our lives, which is the inspiration behind my blog name – In Our Stillness.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?
Professionally, I dream of coaching and helping women to find their own sense of wellness – to come up with their own definition of what healthy living means. I dream of writing books and maybe even diving into the world of freelance writing. I also want to start a self-care revolution where women everywhere start to prioritise their own needs and their wellbeing.
Personally, I dream of a life full of travel, exploration, adventure and love. I see myself continuing to grow and learn and I will hopefully be loving every minute of it.
WHY DO YOU CHOOSE TO NOURISH YOUR BODY WITH HEALTHY FOODS AND POSITIVE THOUGHTS?
In short, because it makes me feel good.
I choose to nourish my body with healthy food and positive thoughts because it fills me up on so many different levels. Good food and positive thoughts feed not only my body, but also my mind and soul.
When I’m choosing foods because of how much nutrition they offer and how they make me feel, rather than how many calories they have, I’m acknowledging to myself that feeling good is my priority, rather than looking a certain way. I don’t choose healthy foods to lose weight or fit into my skinny jeans, I choose to nourish my body so that I can feel happy from the inside out.
Filling my mind and soul with positive thoughts is one way that I practice self-love. And again, it helps me feel happy, supported and loved from the inside out.
WHAT DOES MEDITATION LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? WHY DO YOU DO IT?
I try to meditate most days. Often this looks like me getting comfy on the couch and tuning into my breath. I usually aim for 10 minutes of stillness, sometimes more and definitely sometimes less.
In the last year I’ve started practicing a few guided meditations, although time is a big factor in how often I listen to a guided meditation, as generally these are 20 to 30 minutes long.
I also love going for a walk on the beach or in the bush, sitting down and getting still. I keep my eyes open and simply soak in the beauty around me.
I meditate because it helps me connect to my inner guide – I can figure out how I feel, how I want to continue to feel, and what I want out of a given situation. It also grounds me into the present moment and if I let my practice slip for awhile I find that little things can start to bother me or stress me out.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 5 TIPS FOR LIVING A HEALTHY AND HAPPY LIFE?
1. Prioritise you. Put your needs first, and take care of yourself every single day. In any way that works for you.
2. Experiment and discover what makes you feel your best. And then do it.
3. Choose nourishing foods the majority of the time, but don’t feel guilty if you eat something “bad”.
4. On that notes, stop labelling foods as good and bad, or clean and dirty. When it comes down to it, food is just food, even if some of it offers more nutrition than others.
5. Add in some stillness to your life, even it’s only for a few minutes.
WHAT’S ONE THING YOU’D MOST LIKE TO CHANGE ABOUT THE WORLD?
I wish that women would start to prioritise their self-care. As women we give so much and we so often put the needs of our loved ones first, but it’s so important that we remember that our needs and desires also need to be met. We can only ever be the best version of ourselves (whether that is as a friend, partner, work colleague, confidant, mother, daughter – or a mixture of all of these) when we are taking care of ourselves first.
I would love to live in a world where women take time for themselves every single day, and where these moments of self-care are completely relished and enjoyed.
IF YOU COULD OFER A CHILD VERSION OF YOURSELF ONE PIECE OF ADVICE, WHAT WULD IT BE?
I would give myself a huge bear hug, and look deep into my eyes. I would say ‘honey, you are perfect exactly as you are. Don’t worry so much about what other people think or the number on the scale. You are more than enough – exactly as you are.’
I FEEL ALIVE WHEN…
I open my eyes after a meditation. When I’m throwing my body through a wave. Staring into my boyfriend’s eyes. When I’m travelling. After a yoga class. When I’m hiking through beautiful bushland. When I pause and take a few moments to appreciate everything amazing in my life.
THE THING I LOVE MOST ABOUT MYSELF…
My positive outlook. No matter what is going on in my life I can also find something to laugh or smile about.
TO ME, SELF HEALTH WELLNESS MEANS…
finding my own sense of health and wellness, based on what makes me feel good. It means not blindly following trends or doing something just because someone else is doing it. It means finding a style of eating, exercise, meditation and thinking that suits my lifestyle and allows me to live and feel the way I want to.
