Indulged a bit over the holidays? Read on to find out what my favorite detoxifying foods are, and how to add them to your diet this Winter.
Top 10 Winter Detox Foods to add to your diet:
1.) Lemons- Protect liver function and prevent oxidative damage related to stress; aid in nutrient absorption and flushes out toxins acting as a mild diuretic.
(Start your morning with a warm mug of lemon water to rev your metabolism/digestion)
2.) Cruciferous Vegetables (broccoli, brussels sprouts, bok choy, etc.)- High in fiber, which aids in elimination, and also boost liver health with anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anticancer properties
(Roast and serve alongside some salmon for an extra detox!)
3.) Garlic- Helps to activate the liver detox enzymes, and contains many antibacterial agents (Sautée with leafy greens, or add to your roasted dishes)
4.) Beets- High in antioxidants, fiber, and pectin (a natural blood cleanser); they also amplify certain enzymes that support the liver
(Roast and throw on top of salads, or sautée with the beet greens-- don't throw these away, they're delicious)
5.) Turmeric- Contains curcumin which is a powerful antioxidant that has incredible anti-inflammatory properties; also helps detoxify the liver by increasing bile production in the gallbladder, which allows the liver to eliminate toxins and digest fats.
(Mix 1 tsp into heated non-dairy milk of choice with black pepper + honey for a golden milk latte, or sprinkle in soups, curries, or over vegetables)
6.) Cilantro- Binds to heavy metal toxins and helps expel them from the body
(Serve on top of salmon or throw some in your guacamole for an extra detox)
7.) Avocado- fatty acids in avocados help protect damage caused by powerful liver toxins (Eat it with literally anything!)
8.) Organic Apples- Rich in soluble fiber pectin, which helps rid toxins from the bloodstream (Slice and eat with almond butter for snacks, add to salads, or bake for a warm and healthy dessert)
9.) Salmon- Reduce inflammation and boost immune functioning
(Broil and serve along side veggies or over brown rice... My favorite way is to sprinkle some turmeric and black pepper, and roast with coconut oil & cilantro for an extra anti-inflammatory kick)
10.) Ginger- Boosts your body’s ability to process food and aids in elimination; protects agains oxidative stress with anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties
(Add fresh grated ginger to stir fries, or make a healing tonic by adding it to hot water with lemon and honey)
Happy Detoxin'!
